Description
AXIS Dance Company is justifiably acclaimed for many reasons. And only partly because they make it a habit to work sterling collaborators like Bill T Jones, Joe Goode and Stephen Petronio. For their November 2009 home season they’ve commissioned Guggenheim Fellow David Dorfman who, with Lightweight Shelter for a Storm, promises to push the physically integrated company’s physical and performance limits with his customary blend of wry wit, athleticism and intricate partnering. The mix of able-bodied and disabled dancers has wowed more than a few dance critics with their level of execution. They also have a bona fide star in Rodney Bell, the native Maori dancer who uses his wheelchair with the athletic and sometimes reckless precision on display in the film Murderball.
